Behind the Book

The Story Behind From Feet to Mind

Writing From Feet to Mind: An Evidence-Based Guide to Behaviour Change in Podiatry didn’t start as a grand plan. It grew from everyday clinical realities, the questions I carried between home visits and university, and the process of developing my dissertation—where my tutors encouraged me to take the work further and consider publishing my findings. Today, it stands as the first book pioneering behaviour change in podiatry, turning evidence into practical, clinic-ready tools. That experience became the foundation for this book.

From Classroom to Clinic

In podiatry, we don’t just treat feet—we support people through decisions that shape long-term health and quality of life. Yet behaviour change can feel elusive, for patients and clinicians alike. I often sensed a gap between the theory we were taught and the patient-centred tools that make a difference in clinic.

The Turning Point: My Dissertation

“While researching how diabetic foot ulcers affect quality of life, I saw—clearly—that behaviour change is not an add-on to podiatry. It’s the thread that runs through prevention, adherence, and recovery.”

That project gave me the evidence and language to describe what I’d witnessed in practice: progress happens when we make change possible—by understanding motivation, capability, and opportunity, and by shaping care around real lives. The dissertation didn’t end the journey; it ignited it. It merged my academic work with my clinical experience and became the seed for this book.

The Push from My Tutors

I wouldn’t have taken this further without my tutors’ encouragement. They pushed me to take my dissertation to a higher level, challenged me to deepen the research, and strongly encouraged me to publish my findings. Their belief and guidance helped me achieve a distinction, and it was through this process that the idea for a wider, more practical resource began to take shape. What started as an academic project gradually grew into something tangible—a book that others could actually use.

From Notes to Pages

I started collecting the tools I needed as a student and new clinician: clear model snapshots, clinic prompts, and scripts that respect both evidence and the reality of a busy appointment. The manuscript grew chapter by chapter, always asking: Would this help a student tomorrow? Would this support a clinician in a 20-minute slot?

Why This Book Matters

From Feet to Mind is the first book dedicated to applying behaviour change science directly in podiatry practice. It combines evidence, psychological theory, and practical frameworks—written for students and busy clinicians. It’s designed to be practical, relatable, and clinic-ready, because behaviour change isn’t just academic; it’s central to better outcomes.

  • Student-friendly overviews of key models and when to use them
  • Clinic tools, prompts, and plain-language scripts
  • Realistic examples drawn from everyday podiatry
